Series: What Will Hold Us Together
Sermon: All for God's Glory (1 Cor 7:1-16)

Summary: As one loved and redeemed by God, you are to live for Him. And since God redeemed not just a part of you but all of you, every aspect of your life is now sacred - able to give glory to God (1 Cor 10:31). This includes your desire for love and marriage. You can take this desire in your own hands or you can surrender it to the author of love and the creator of marriage. God has commanded that believers must marry believers. This isn't an arbitrary rule, nor is it meant to be a moral code we just have to follow. This command was given for our good - for without it, there would be a loss of intimacy. A believer marrying a believer means every significant area of their lives overlap (and there is no area of life more significant to a christian then their relationship with God). This is the foundation for intimacy. On the other hand, a believer marrying an unbeliever means that the most significant area of life for the believer (their relationship with God) can never be shared. Furthermore, the unbelieving spouse would have his or her own god (maybe the god of another faith or the god of money, materialism, success etc.). Whatever the case may be, the God of the bible has already set himself against all other gods vying for the allegiance of our hearts. How can a marriage and family stand when husband and wife, father and mother serve gods who are at war with one another?

1.How open are you to dating a non-christian (honestly)? Why or why not?
2. Do you believe that true intimacy is possible only between a christian and a non-christian?
3. Do you agree that in order for you to be involved with a person of a different faith, you need to compromise the biblical definition of marriage (Gen 2:24) and conversion (Col 3:1-4).
(ie you have to make marriage less than what it is and make what it means to be a christian less than what it is)
4. Our culture says that love is about happiness, romance, and feeling. Our faith says that marriage is about holiness, faithfulness, and character transformation. To which do you gravitate?
5. Where did marriage come from? And why does this matter?

Sermon Series: What Will Hold Us Together
Sermon: Our Purity Part II (I Corinthians 6:12-20)

Summary: Purity means to be made of one thing. To give God glory is the one thing we're called to live for with all that we are. This means we can't compartmentalize our lives and give what is convenient to God, withholding what we want. Christ demands all of us - including our bodies. Being a christian means that food, sleep, speech, sex, (the things we do with our bodies) are to be consecrated to Him as well. This is only possible when we realize 1. that our bodies were given not to satisfy its cravings but to glorify God and 2. that Christ set us free not so that we'll do anything we want but so that we will live out our true purpose - which is to glorify him through purity of devotion. Our bodies are not just a shell to be used in whatever way we wish. What we do with our bodies registers in our spirit. Therefore let us honour God with our bodies.

Discussion Questions.

1. What new teaching in the sermon impacted you? Why?
2. What are the ways we separate our physical life from our spiritual life?
3. 1 Cor 10:31 says "Whether you eat for drink, do it all for the glory of God." How can eating and drinking glorify God? How can eating and drinking be sinful?
4. Our culture views sexual purity as nonsense. How do you feel about sexual purity - both in deed and thought? Why is it important to be sexually pure?

Sermon: What Will Hold Us Together? Our Purity
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5:1-12

Summary: We've all heard of church scandals and know the damage they cause. The damage is felt not only in the church but outside as well. When believers fail to deal with sin in the lives of its members, sin multiplies and spreads. This destroys the church's witness to the surrounding culture and grieves God. Therefore we must learn not only to deal with our own sins but the sins of our brothers and sisters as well. There are three appropriate responses to the sins of other believers. First is mourning. We are called to care deeply for one another to the point where we grieve over their sins. Second, we're called to exercise judgement - not in a proud and condemning way - but judgement in the sense of right and wrong. We must not shy away from calling sin in the lives of our brothers and sisters for what it really is. And third we must act. If a brother or sister is unrepentant, we must do something. Doing nothing while a fellow believer sins is not an option. One thing that will help us to act is when we prioritize their future well-being over their immediate needs. Their immediate need might be acceptance and friendship but such things will never bring repentance. We must act by withholding our acceptance and friendship so they, seeing the the consequences of their actions, will come turn their lives around. While such an act may seem cruel, this 'cruelty' is really an act of grace in the bigger picture.

Discussion Questions:
1. How would you handle a situation in which your friend was clearly sinning? How would you respond?
2. Do you think you would ever withdraw your friendship from a friend who was unrepentant? If not, why not?
3. Do you think that you could ever come to a situation where you had to choose friendship with God over friendship with one of your friends? What kind of situation would bring something like this about?
4. In some cultures, an individual`s sin is blamed on the family or community (the rationale being that the individual is a product of his or her family). If there is a moral failing in the church, should the church be blamed?

Sermon: Our Foundation (1 Corinthians 3:1-12)
Date: October 13, 2011

Summary:
When people are divided, the church cannot stand. The life of Christ flows through the body of Christ which is the church. Now if the members of the body of Christ are divided, then the life of Christ in that church is emptied. Forgive me but imagine a body that has been severed, divided into different parts - could you say that there is life in that body? No, the body ceased to be alive the moment it was severed. The same is true of the church. Division kills life and revival in the church. Now one of the most subtle and therefore dangerous temptations in church life is to prefer one pastor/leader over the others. This divided loyalty negates what God is doing through all the pastors and leaders whom he himself has called. Pastors are servants called by God. They are not gurus or saviours. They are simply men called to a specific task for which they will be held accountable to God. Pastors are part of a greater work that God is doing, which is greater than any one man can accomplish. And it is God himself who is building the church. Do not put pastors/leaders on a pedestal nor treat them too harshly by expecting them to fulfill things for which they have not been gifted. Be loyal to the work God is doing in a church through the pastors, do not be loyal to any one pastor over and above another. They are simply workers in God's field. You however are the field, for which God has a wonderful plan.

1. How do you think preference of a particular pastor or leader is dangerous?
2. Have you experienced division that resulted from various loyalties to various pastors?
3. What kind of pastor/leader do you tend to gravitate towards? Why?
4. What did you think of the way God has used Rev Kim, Rev Lee, and Rev Song at YN?
5. How do you feel about YN?

Sermon: Our Common Calling (1 Corinthians 6:1-11)
Date: Sunday November 6, 2011

Summary:
Conflict is a part of life. There will be times when we are wronged and cheated (there will also be times when we wrong and cheat others). How are we to deal with it? Is there an alternative other than replaying the offense over and over in our minds, wishing we had said this or done that and come out the victor? Harbouring resentment and plotting ways to even the score? There is but the answer may take us deeper than we're willing to go - for it asks that we face some big questions of our faith: What we're called for, What we're called to, and What we've been called from. Only when we see clearly that we've been called for a glorious destiny - that all which is truly good will be ours forever because of what Christ has done, will we be able to handle losing the perishable things of this world - reputation, money, time. Only when we see clearly what we're called to - that is to be his witnesses to those around us - we will consider it more important to display love, peace, and virtue than to get even. And only when we see clearly what we've been called from - a life of sin and death, and this by the cross, can we say 'since Christ forgave me, i will forgive you.'

Discussion Questions:
1. Think of the last few times you were wronged? How did you react? Was it surprising?
2. Why do you think you reacted in that way?
3. What happens if someone takes the attitude "I will never be wronged!" to its logical conclusion?
4. How can you apply the gospel (that Christ died so that we could truly live) to yourself the next time you're wronged?

This event is for the children in the various children ministries.
Donations of candy and other goodies are needed in order for this event to be awesome.

Promise Keepers Men's Conference

This conference aims to help Christian men in the battle to be godly in all aspects of life.
It will be happening at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.

For all who signed up for Oasis, our small group ministry,
our first meeting will be THIS Friday Oct. 14th, starting at 7pm.
Come out for some dinner, and to meet your groups and leaders.

We'll be going to Jen Bok's house.
